Gene Hurwin, OTR/L Executive Director Gene holds a bachelor's degree in music and a master’s degree in occupational therapy from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and has over 25 years of experience in gymnastics instruction. After completing OT school in 1999, Gene began to develop the “BIG FUN method,” an incorporation of occupational therapy principles with gymnastics instruction for the purpose of improving the quality of life for special needs children. Since founding BIG FUN Therapy and Recreational Services in 2001, Gene has presented the topic of “Special Needs Children and Gymnastics” at USA Gymnastics conferences across the country. In 2003, at the Annual Science Symposium, part of the World Gymnastics Games held in Anaheim, California, Gene became the first occupational therapist to present to the international group when he lectured on the “Assessment Process for Special Needs Children in Gymnastics.” He has published several articles about the use of gymnastics and movement as a method of intervention for children with special needs. Currently, BIG FUN Therapy and Recreational Services serves nearly 500 children throughout Southern California and Arizona and is deeply involved in many organizations throughout the special needs community. Gene is continually raising the bar for his staff members and the children in his program, challenging both groups to reach their potential and find new avenues to growth. Pulling from his extensive athletic background and his occupational therapy knowledge, Gene trains his staff to focus extensively on the rehabilitative properties of movement and has worked with both children and adults who have faced life-altering physical circumstances, helping them realign goals and discover alternative paths for success.
